Recently both AMD and Intel announced their newest line of enthusiast cpus with a huge emphasis on core count. AMD announced their new Ryzen Threadripper series with up to 16 cores while Intel announced their new Core i9 series with up to 18 cores. Both of these releases seem to have consumers excited about computer hardware!

Ryzen Processors

Earlier this year AMD released its Ryzen processors and it definitely shook up the market. AMDs Ryzen R7 1800X had near the performance of Intel’s i7-6900K which was priced at $1000 for only $500. Intel said that it was never too concerned about Ryzen but their response to AMDs Ryzen Threadripper series says otherwise.

Intel is shaking in their boots

Intel’s newest Core i9 series of enthusiast processors seems like a direct response to AMDs Threadripper series. For the past couple of years Intel has only increased the core count of its top enthusiast processor by two at the most. Intel’s current best enthusiast offering is the i7-6950X with 10 cores, previous rumors stated that Intel had plans of releasing a 12 core processor. These rumors seemed to be confirmed by confusion of motherboard manufacturers at Computex 2017 saying they were never briefed on 14, 16 and 18 core products being released by Intel. Typically, Intel also announces their CPUs just a few weeks before they are ready for launch; however, their Core i9 series CPUs won’t be ready for launch until the end of 2017.

Which of the enthusiast CPUs is better?

Though both companies have announced their new products neither have released them to the public. With Intel’s seemingly knee jerk reaction and insane price point of $2000 for their Core i9-7980XE we have high hopes that AMD is able to offer comparable performance at nearly half the price. We will have to wait and see the results of this rejuvenated CPU manufacturer battle.

Apple has built quite the name for themselves over the years. Apple customers claim things like “They just work”, “I never have any problems”, “It does what I need”. Are these things true? Well, yes and no. Apple computers are great and generally they do work as you would expect, but there are some downsides to Apple as well. Apple computers are more expensive, they have less compatibility, and they are much harder to repair.

The Operating System

Apple computers rely on a special operating system called Mac OS. This is where most users will notice the most difference when using the computer. Mac OS is Apple's own proprietary operating system designed specifically to run on Apple hardware. Running its own operating system gives Apple the ability to optimize their computers better than any other computer manufacturer and this shows when it comes to all aspects. This is both a blessing and a curse. Due to Apple having their own operating system for their computers to run pieces of software they must be written specifically for MacOS. Now this is not a problem for new software but a lot of older software only has support for windows. This means your old printer or favorite word processing program probably isn’t going to work on your new MacBook.

The Apple Computer Hardware

Apple hardware can typically be described with just one word, gorgeous. Apple makes computers that pack as much punch as their windows counterparts but tend to be half the size. Apple uses aluminum throughout their entire laptop where their competitors use plastic. The hardware in their computers tends to be top notch. The only disadvantage here is the price of Apple products in comparison to equal windows computers. When you buy from Apple unfortunately their prices can be up to 50% more than a comparable windows computer. The Apple MacBook Pro 15 starts at $1999 where a Dell XPS 15 with similar specs is around $1500, a huge increase considering both laptops perform almost identically. Thia extra expense goes towards the Apple store experience and telephone support which some people call the “Apple Tax”. Though some do believe it is worth it, if you are on a budget the Dell XPS might be the computer you want to go for. Unfortunately, when it comes to computer repair, Apple computers cost the most and it is not even close. For a major repair like a logic board replacement, on an Apple computer, a customer can expect to pay upwards of $750 to get their computer up and running again. A motherboard replacement on a comparable windows PC is expected to be around $300. Apple really likes to make sure its customers really consider just buying a new MacBook instead of just repairing their old one.

The Overall Experience

Overall the Apple experience is wonderful. Many of the issues that had previously plagued the Mac such as application support are slowly going away. Many developers now make both a Windows and Mac version. The cost of Apple computers is high but the speed, performance and aesthetics of their computers does reflect the price you pay. How to handle a laptop liquid spill emergency. Since the conception of electronics liquids and circuits have been mortal enemies. We often here that a glass of your favorite drink mixed with your laptop means almost certain death. We have a series of steps that might mean otherwise. A liquid spill on an electronic device is truly a serious issue. When it comes to these accidents time is of the essence. If these steps are followed correctly there is a good chance we can save your laptop.

Step 1:

If your computer has not already shut itself off, turn it off immediately. We know we recommend never pulling the power if the computer is off, but in this case its different. Remove the battery, pull the plug, or even hold the power button, whatever you must do to get the computer off, do it.


Step 2:

Make note of the general spill location for future reference, your tech at ABC Computers Plus might need it.


Step 3:

Turn the laptop or electronic device in the opposite direction of the spill. This is to try to remove any liquids from dripping further into the laptop. For example, if the liquid went into the keyboard, flip the laptop over so the keys are facing down.


Step 4:

Call or drive to ABC Computers Plus ASAP. In most cases if the computer is still wet from the original spill, the liquid spill cleanup has a much better chance of being successful. This is due to dried liquid residue being more conductive compared to their previous liquid state.


Step 5:

DO NOT try to dry the computer using a hair dryer or putting the electronic device in a bag of rice. As stated in the step before dried liquids are even more conductive compared to their liquid counterparts. More conductivity between the sensitive motherboard components typically is a direct correlation with the amount of damage done to the device. Even if this method results in a working computer, commonly devices stop working soon after due to residue left on less commonly used circuits on the motherboard.

These disks are accompanied by a moving drive head. Both the spinning drive and drive head take time to operate a task when called upon.

Just like cars, the moving parts inside a hard drive may break over time which may lead to extensive data loss if not backed up properly. Standard hard drives are typically only given a 1 year warranty. Solid State Drives may have up to a 5 year warranty depending on the brand.
